Gift Dad an Unforgettable Weekend in the Shenandoah Valley

Some dads can be hard to shop for while others can’t get enough tools and materials for their favorite hobby. While you could get dad another fishing bait or that “World’s Best Dad” mug, why not gift him new memories with a three day weekend getaway in the Shenandoah Valley.

A stay at Cider House Bed and Breakfast is the ideal spot for an exciting few days. Based in Waynesboro VA, you’ll be a short trip from Charlottesville, Staunton, Blue Ridge Parkway, the Appalachian Trail, and the entrance to Shenandoah National Park’s Skyline Drive. There are so many options when it comes to hiking, shows, events, and places to eat. We’ve made it easy for you and put together a well balanced itinerary for your three day stay.

And before you worry about finding time between both of your busy schedules, not only is this itinerary flexible for any time of the year, but we also offer gift certificates!

Friday: Arrival

Check-in between 4-6pm and settle into your rooms.
If you’re not too tired from your drive, you have the option to start up the grill, light up the fire pit, and enjoy making dinner together. Stone Ledge Cider is crafted on the farm with apples grown in our orchard. Nothing is better in the Summer afternoon than burgers, brats, and cold hard cider.

If you prefer to head into town for a bite, we suggest The River burger bar. Start with a shared basket of Lunker Fries and choose from nine unique burgers including the “Waynesburger” inspired by the rich history of Waynesboro.

Saturday: Hike, Bike, or Fish

Breakfast

Your morning starts with scratch made breakfast served between 8-9am, featuring a hot breakfast staple like omelets, quiche, waffles, or french toast and paired with bacon or sausage, a fruit, yogurt, and pastry.

Hike the Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail

Head only a few miles to Afton, VA to explore the Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail featuring a historic 1850s railroad tunnel. Bring along flashlights or head lamps to walk the 4,273-foot passage carved beneath the Blue Ridge Mountains. We love this trail not only because of the amazing experience of walking the tunnel, but also because you have options on the length of your hike!

  • For a flat, .6 mile hike to the tunnel (2.25 mile round trip), start your hike at the Eastern Trailhead (215 Afton Depot Lane, Afton, VA).
  • For a full 4.6 mile hike round trip, which is steeper, longer, and includes switchbacks, start at the Western Trailhead (483 Three Notched Highway, Waynesboro, VA)
Remember to bring flashlights, water, and your camera!

Fish the South River

South River Fly Shop in Downtown Waynesboro offers full service fly fishing tours. Choose from several packages at different price points that take place at different water spots in the surrounding area. The South River is a two mile catch-and-release section flowing through downtown and accessed by the South River Greenway and Constitution Park. Looking for something a little more secluded or scenic? Chat with the guides about a trip to the Shenandoah, James, or Jackson River or a backcountry trip. These tours fill up quickly around peak season so be sure to book your guide in advance!

Dinner

After a day out in the sun, it’s nice to be able to settle into a spot for dinner and listen to live music for an hour or two. Check out The Foundry for pizza, burgers, wings, and more. Basic City Beer Co, where The Foundry is located,  is known for their award winning selection of craft beer. On June 20th, Leroy Burks & The Voodoo Whiskey band are bringing “the ultimate honky tonk experience”. The Foundry has live music every Saturday so if you’re visiting another weekend, check their website to see who’s playing.

Sunday: Departure

While it might be time to head home and get back to your usual routine, there’s still some time to make a few more memories with Dad.

Morning

Enjoy another delicious breakfast at Cider House Bed and Breakfast. Before check out at 11am, walk around the farm and visit with the alpacas, donkeys, yaks, goats, sheep, and cows. Sit out on the deck and enjoy a slow morning.

On your way home

Before heading out of town, make sure to stop for lunch. We love Shredders Smokehouse for their smoked meatloaf, brisket tacos, and amazing banana pudding.

We hope your stay is full of wonderful memories and quality time. Cider House Bed and Breakfast is ideally located only a short drive from Washington DC, Maryland, West Virginia and North Carolina.
