Top 10 sources for local Blue Ridge food

One of the best parts of getting to know the area around Waynesboro, from Albemarle and Nelson County, east of the Blue Ridge, to Augusta and Rockbridge Counties in Shenandoah Valley, is seeking out locally-sourced food and those who make it. Besides being great food, from great people, made on this great land, buying local provides local jobs and supports local agriculture. Most of these vendors have catalogs on their websites to ship direct.

  1. Sunrise Farms: Beef, pork, lamb, turkey, chicken, eggs, honey. Beautiful farm in Stuart’s Draft where we get the sausage patties and eggs we serve. And a few recipes, like their Sausage and Egg Breakfast Casserole.
  2. Autumn Olive: Beef and pork. Our source for bacon and sausage links.
  3. Wade’s Mill: Stone-ground grain since 1750. Flour, corn meal, preserves, etc. Love their 3-Grain Shenandoah Pancake mix (wheat flour, corn meal, and buckwheat).
  4. Mudhouse Coffee Roasters: Coffee roasters in Crozet. Recommended to us by a guest who was a self-proclaimed coffee snob.
  5. Stuarts Draft Farm Market: It starts with a large produce stand, and then you get sucked into the depth of a full country store with a wide variety of locally-sourced products.
  6. Goodwin Creek Farm and Bakery; Bread. We usually get their sandwich bread at Crozet Market, which also has a great produce section, but you can order online for pickup at their farm.
  7. The Cheese Shop: A local institution, with a wide variety of bulk items, locally sourced dairy, meats, jams, etc, and a sandwich shop. A good source for Mt Crawford Creamery (milk and butter) and Southernmost Maple (maple syrup from Highland County).
  8. Caromont Farm: Farmstead cheese from happy goats.
  9. Mountain View Farm: Dairy products, including cheese.
  10. Chiles Peach Orchard: Peaches, apples, jams, mixes, etc. There are several great orchards nearby, and until our apple trees grow up we’re buying a lot of apples. But they get more visits from us due to their awesome Apple Butter and Moonshine Barbecue Sauces. Which has nothing to do with breakfast.
